IL DONO: DAY EIGHTY ONE WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE?

IL DONO (The Gift)
(in Italiano)

Every soul that walks the Earth is completely unique from all the others. The discovery of this uniqueness within the individual is a difficult task. It takes much self-evaluation and dedication to truly understand its power, possibly a lifetime. In a religious, little Italian sea town, middle-aged Verace, works for a local wine maker, assisting him and his family during the harvest process. Within the town everyone knows each other and has very strict moral expectations of its citizens. Widowers walk around in black as the priests stroll the streets blessing people.
Verace, who is single and adored by the towns women, is beautifully shy and keeps himself locked up in his house. During the late evening hours he secretly works by candlelight in his upstairs attic, as people outside curiously wonder what goes on inside. The house is heavily locked as Verace makes sure no one is around when he goes to work. One late night the winemaker’s daughter follows Verace home and tries to see what he is doing inside. He discovers her curiosity and quickly questions her presence near his home. He demands that she leave, but she will not since she desires to know what secret lies in his attic. He gets frustrated with her and retreats back to his house.
The next day is the annual harvest celebration where everyone in the town arrives to the vineyard to participate in the stomping of the grapes ceremony. During the party Verace spots the wine maker’s daughter leaving the vineyard. He decides to follow her as she breaks into this house to find holy candles upstairs in his workspace. His secret is out, revealing his gift of painting and sculpting. She questions why he doesn’t share his talents with the world. He explains that both of his parents were artists and they were killed over their work. They spend the night together discussing plans of the man coming out and displaying his work. They cry and make love all night.
In the early morning the winemaker’s daughter is seen leaving Verace’s house disheveled. She arrives at the vineyard and is met by her angry father that demands she tell him where she has been all night. She shares with her father all the truthful details and when she mentions about making passionate love he pulls out his pistol and shoots her dead. Verace arrives as his boss stands over his dead daughter. Verace immediately retreats back to his house where he prepares a noose from the ceiling and hangs himself. A few minutes later the winemaker and his comrades appear and discover Verace and all his beautiful artwork. A town funeral is held as both bodies are sent out to sea along with Verace’s art. A talent never shared is a lost gift depriving the world of its grace and beauty.
